The Proper Role of Government

The proper role of government is to protect the fundamental rights of all people.

Any additional roles or functions must be agreed upon and delegated to the government by the citizenry. These additional functions should probably be limited to providing essential infrastructure like roads and utilities, or regulating safety-sensitive activities, like transportation, manufacturing, or potential environmental hazards. I am sure that there are those who would disagree with this, but these are realities that must be addressed one way or another. Either way, many would argue that there needs to be some type of government involvement in addressing or regulating these necessities. In a fallen world, there will need to be compromise.

All government functions should be delineated within a covenant contract document, or constitution, that lists:

  • definitions of terms,
  • fundamental rights,
  • enumerated powers,
  • government limitations,
  • eligibility requirements for holding office, voting, and all civic privileges,
  • punishments for high crimes, and
  • government processes.

If these things are not thoroughly and tightly defined and addressed, would-be statists will find ways to circumvent constitutional limitations and, step by step, weaken and amend the constitution into a meaningless and malevolent document, as has occurred within the United States of America.

Of course, it is easily recognized that these few thoughts I have shared on fundamental rights and the proper role of government are very abbreviated. My intent is not to extensively elaborate on these topics, but to insert these essential truths into a much larger framework of truth that must be understood in establishing context for the overarching immutable laws of God. I also assert that if everyone on the planet understood these simple political principles, as explained in these few political chapters, we would have a heaven on earth.

And so again, I strongly suggest reading Joel Skousen’s essays on Philosophy of Law and Government (https://joelskousen.com/philosophy). And I suggest reading The Proper Role of Government by Ezra Taft Benson, and The Law by Frederic Bastiat. I also suggest the political writing of W. Cleon Skousen.
