Sometimes a song says far more than its author ever intended. Show Yourself, from Frozen II, is such a song for me.

When I hear its haunting plea, I hear something very different from Elsa’s search for identity or to discover the mystery of her parents’ disappearance. I hear the cry of a soul searching for Jesus Christ.

Show Yourself.

What a prayer!

Who dares to pray for such a thing?

But there comes a point in our journey when merely believing that Christ exists is no longer enough. We have heard the stories. We have read the scriptures. We have felt His influence and occasionally heard the quiet whisper of His voice. We believe He is there. But somewhere deep within us grows an almost unbearable longing: I want to know You. I want to see You. Show Yourself to me.

This is not an unscriptural desire. Christ Himself promised, “He that hath my commandments, and keepeth them, he it is that loveth me… and I will love him, and will manifest myself to him” (John 14:21). The brother of Jared sought the Lord until faith gave way to sight and the veil could no longer keep the vision of the Lord from him (Ether 3, 12). The scriptures testify repeatedly that God is not merely an idea to be studied, but a Being who desires to reveal Himself to those who diligently seek Him.

And perhaps this is where the song becomes most beautiful. We begin by asking Christ to show us who He is, only to discover that in doing so, He reveals who we are. And He reveals who and what we can likewise become through faith in Him.

The nearer we come to Him, and the better we come to understand His doctrine, the more clearly we begin to understand what we were created to become.

In this visual, I see a faithful, pure, and chaste woman, the betrothed bride of Christ, kneeling before her Lord. It is this depth of intimacy which we are all invited to experience with Christ. He is calling to all of us, but who will answer His call?

So when I hear Show Yourself, I do not hear merely Elsa calling into the unknown. I hear the prayer of every soul who has sensed Christ calling from beyond the veil, and then likewise calling back:

I know You are there.
I believe in Your doctrine and promises.
I have followed Your voice as best I know how.
I am ready to know You more fully.

Jesus my Lord—show Yourself!
